What the song is about
It is a song about the joy of being in love — in the arms of the person she loves, the singer sees the whole world in rosy colours. Édith Piaf wrote the lyrics and Louiguy, her former pianist, composed the music in 1945. Piaf sang it from 1946 and it was released as a single in 1947.
At first the song was registered under Louiguy’s name alone, because Piaf did not yet hold the qualification needed to register her work with SACEM, the French songwriters’ society. Arriving just after the war, its simple happiness struck a chord, and it became Piaf’s signature song.
