Filipino is the national language of the Philippines and is built on Tagalog — in practice the two names are used almost interchangeably, and a translation into one will be understood by speakers of the other. It uses the Latin alphabet, so there is nothing to decipher before you can read a result aloud.

What machine translation handles worst here is politeness. Filipino marks respect with the particles po and opo, dropped into a sentence to show deference to someone older or senior. They carry no meaning a translator can render into English, so they are usually dropped altogether — and their absence is exactly what makes a translated sentence sound blunt to a Filipino ear.

The other trap is the verb system. Filipino verbs change shape with affixes (mag-, um-, -in, -an) to mark which part of the sentence is in focus — closer to a spotlight than to English tense. Machines pick one reading and do not mention that they chose.

Three centuries of Spanish rule left a large vocabulary behind, which makes some words unexpectedly familiar: kumusta is ¿cómo está?, and mesa, silya and kutsara are the Spanish table, chair and spoon. Everyday speech also code-switches freely with English — often called Taglish — so a natural sentence may contain both languages at once.
